Arsenal head to promoted Brentford in the season opener

For some reason I still find it slightly strange for a season to start on a Friday, and the fact that we are the opening game, and this is Friday the 13th. I can see all the memes and headlines already. Going into the season I am normally feeling some quiet inner confidence, that we can surprise a few people. However, whether it be our poor pre-season or lack of first team signings, something has left the mood amongst many Gooners flat and dare I say one of irritation. Much was spoken about our need to change at the end of last season following two back-to-back 8th finishes. I know, the transfer window is still open, and business can run up until the end of August, but what about making a strong start? Seems once again we go into the season half prepared ready to gift points in the first few games, because we failed to do our business early. And I don’t even want to start on the players still in the club.

I think the fact the team have been playing in a similar fashion in the pre-season games is what is making many feel annoyed. Everything feels the same and this was supposed to be our major summer of change, following our lack of European football for the first time in twenty-five years. Not only are many of the players the same but the coaching doesn’t seem to have implemented any new ideas either. Okay, okay, its pre-season I’m told, wait for the games to start.

With the team being the way it is, I’d expect a back line of Leno, Tierney, Mari, White and Chambers. With Xhaka, Lokonga and Smith-Row to make up the three-man midfield. Up top in pre-season Aubameyang has still had his issues, prompting Arteta to move him back to the left wing. So, I’d imagine Lacazette will start up top, with Pepe on the right and Auba on the left. It even sounds stale. I’m expecting a good game from the captain, as he has looked sharper in terms of sprints, just missing that cutting edge. Brentford are going to be up for the first game in the new ground in a new league, but I think Auba should get some good chances tonight.

Lastly, following a year for of Covid related issues, I’m back and happy to be putting content back on the channel. The podcast and the site have undergone a re-brand, and I’d like to take the time to thank us guys for supporting.
